The story goes that it was the London-based company Wildsmith Shoes that created the first 'modern' moccasin as a casual shoe for country walks, custom-made for English royalty and nobles.
King George VI-father of our beloved Queen Elizabeth II-wore them in 1847.
The moccasin trend landed in the States as well, of course, immediately seized upon in 1876 by George H. Bass-an expert shoe craftsman-who made a small but distinctive modification to the shoe: a small piece of leather sewn over the back of the foot carved with a diamond-shaped buttonhole.
Confirmation of its success came in 1936 with the creation of the Bass Weejuns moccasin, the first penny loafers in history.
Why is it called PENNY loafers?
The brushed leather moccasin was the footwear of English and American college students in those years (and years to come), who were in the habit of inserting a penny into the buttonhole on the back of the shoe created by Bass himself.
