La storia narra che fu l'azienda londinese Wildsmith Shoes ad aver creato il primo mocassino 'moderno' come scarpa casual per le passeggiate in campagna, fatta su misura per i reali e nobili inglesi.
Re Giorgio VI - padre della nostra amatissima Regina Elisabetta II - li indossò nel 1847.
La tendenza del mocassino sbarcò ovviamente anche negli States, subito colta nel 1876 da George H. Bass - esperto artigiano di calzature - che apportò una piccola, ma distintiva modifica alla scarpa: un pezzettino di pelle cucito sopra il dorso del piede intagliato con un'asola a forma di diamante.
La conferma del suo successo arrivò nel 1936 con la realizzazione del mocassino Bass Weejuns, il primo penny loafers della storia.
Perché si chiama PENNY loafers?
Il mocassino in pelle spazzolata è stata la calzatura degli studenti dei college inglesi e americani di quegli anni (e degli anni a venire), che avevano l'abitudine di inserire un penny nell'asola sul dorso della scarpa creata proprio da Bass.
Diventata negli anni una scarpa iconica, comoda e indossata anche da tantissime celebrità come Grace Kelly, Steve McQueen, Katharine Hepburn e molti altri, ai giorni nostri la ritroviamo in svariati look casual con denim e t-shirt, in look un po' più sofisticati con calzino in seta e gonna pencil midi o pantalone nero e trench, oppure ancora perfetti con un tailleur giacca-pantalone per il lavoro.

P.s.2 Ogni piede è speciale e per questa scarpa è importante valutare tante cose tra cui la larghezza della pianta del piede, quanto il piede sia magro, il collo del piede, etc.
